Downing Street

On Tuesday 11th June, Stafford’s parliamentary candidate, Jeremy Lefroy, together with County Councillor Mark Winnington will deliver a petition carrying the signatures of nearly 2,000 residents to 10 Downing Street. The petition opposes the Government-inspired proposals by Post Office Ltd to close branches at Great Bridgeford, Marston Road and Wolverhampton Road.

Local councillors, along with young people from Conservative Future and Mr Lefroy have been campaigning against the closures, encouraging people to write in to the consultation process which ended on Monday 9th June. They argue that Post Offices provide vital services to the local community and that the alternative locations are neither nearby nor convenient, especially for those without cars.

Jeremy Lefroy said:
“The response to these plans by the Government has been overwhelming. Of the dozens of people I have spoken to personally, I have met only one who did not oppose these closures. That strength of feeling has been reflected by the public response to our petition.

“The Government keeps telling us that they will listen to the people. Here is a great opportunity to demonstrate that they mean it. I urge Mr Brown to listen to the message from the people in Stafford and stop these closures now.”
